Cell Phones = Mind Numbing Torture

I don't like cell phones. Now I realize that people need it, fair enough. Especially for emergencies, or business. But I can't stand it when people need to use it wherever they're at, it doesn't matter if it's at a restaurant, or in a bookstore, or (gasp) in a bathroom.
Why do people need to yell into their cell phone? Do they think that they're important and people will take notice because they're having a thrilling conversation?
When I was in Japan several years ago I noticed that commuters on the subway and trains would try to lower their voice while they had a conversation on their cell phone. They respected their fellow commuters. But not here in the U.S. People seem to be on a mission to see who has the most annoying cell phone conversation.
Even here in the mountains where I live, not a day goes by where I'll here some hiker shouting into his/her cell phone. I was amazed that they could receive a signal.
I guess I simply can't escape it.
There is no such thing as peace and quiet.
- Nothing,
